WHY DO WE CONSULT?

Consultation is the means through which people are informed about and involved in any decision making. This is achieved by giving them information, so that they can develop an opinion, by providing them with the opportunity to make their views known and by giving them feedback on how the information they share is used.

It is about more than just customer satisfaction but should seek to meet their expectations and involve them in decision-making processes. It is also a means of enhancing organisational reputation by delivering services that are focussed on the customer’s needs.

Previously, both Gwent Police and Gwent Police Authority carried out separate consultation exercises, the results of which were centrally collated for the use of decision-makers in the planning process.

Best practice in consultation provides that where practicable joint consultation should be carried out. In order to provide for this, whilst still allowing for individual consultation to be carried out where necessary, Gwent Police Authority and Gwent Police have set up a joint Community Consultation Working Group.

Directed by a joint Consultation Strategy, the Working Group will report to the Police Authority Service Delivery Committee and the joint Strategic Planning Group on all its activities.
